Hernan Bazan, MD, DFSVS, FACS

Dr. Hernan A. Bazan is the Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery for the Sutter West Bay Medical Group at California Pacific Medical Center, where he leads the strategic development of the vascular program across Sutter Health's Greater San Francisco Division. He joins Sutter most recently from the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, where he served as the John Ochsner Endowed Chair of Cardiovascular Innovation from 2021 to 2026. Clinically, he is regarded as a "complete vascular surgeon," bringing a balanced, comprehensive approach to patient care by offering both traditional open surgery and advanced, minimally invasive endovascular techniques.
A dedicated physician-scientist, Dr. Bazan has extensive expertise in the management of carotid artery disease and stroke. His translational research focuses on decoding the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerotic plaque rupture and utilizing predictive analytics to optimize precision stroke care. A prolific innovator, he is the co-inventor of over a dozen issued or pending patents and the author of over 65 peer-reviewed publications.
His clinical and translational innovation is supported by numerous funding awards, including serving as Principal Investigator on two recent NIH grants. In recognition of his pioneering research, he received the 2024 NIH HEAL Director’s Trailblazer Award, one of only five awarded in the United States.
Dr. Bazan earned his B.S. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University and served as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Scholar at the NIH during medical school. He received his M.D. from Georgetown University, completed his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, and finished his vascular surgery fellowship at Yale University.
