Angelyn Thomas
Dr. Angelyn Thomas is the Administrative Medical Director of Perinatal Services and Co-Chair of the Birth Equity Committee at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC). She also serves as the Birth Equity Clinical Lead for the Sutter Institute for Advancing Healthy Outcomes. Her work plays a pivotal role in reducing maternal mortality among Black women and enhancing perinatal outcomes for Black families.
Dr. Thomas has contributed to numerous projects that have significantly improved quality outcomes. She has collaborated closely with the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) to develop toolkits addressing Birth Equity and Maternal Hemorrhage. She is a sought-after speaker and has shared her expertise on multiple panels discussing best practices in Birth Equity at ABSMC and across the Sutter Health system.
In her current role, Dr. Thomas oversees the integration of inpatient and outpatient perinatal services. Her initiatives include improving exclusive breastfeeding rates, increasing access to doula and midwifery services, and expanding offerings at the perinatal center and NICU. She is part of the leadership team developing a new OB/GYN Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, which includes establishing gynecologic services at the perinatal center. Collaborating with nurses and clinicians, Dr. Thomas strives to maintain high-quality clinical outcomes while enhancing patient satisfaction and reducing lengths of stay. She has successfully implemented standardized discharge practices for both mom and baby. Most recently she renegotiated the contract for unassigned pediatric call coverage, paving the way for a new Pediatric Medical Directorship to ensure comprehensive care.
A Sacramento native, Dr. Thomas earned her Bachelor of Arts in Neurobiology from UC Berkeley. She attended medical school at Harvard University and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown University. Following her residency, she served as faculty at Wilford Hall Medical Center with the United States Air Force, where she was instrumental in integrating a residency program between two military branches and enjoyed mentoring residents.
Dr. Thomas is a Board-Certified physician and has practiced as a full-scope obstetrician-gynecologist with Sutter East Bay Medical Group since 2005. She has held several leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of OB/GYN and Vice President of the Medical Staff at ABSMC.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Thomas enjoys traveling, skiing, running marathons, cooking, scuba diving, and attending live music events.
