Series Description:
Practice gaps related to neuromuscular care result form a gap between best practice recommendations and real-world practice, such as the "osteoporosis care gap" where fewer than 20% of patients may receive care following best practice guidelines and large treatment gaps are observed especially for women >70 years of age with an increased risk for fragility fracture. This series was designed to support Advanced Practice Providers in the goal of applying current care recommendations related to the neuromuscular service line and provides strategies to improve clinical care as well as improve health care equity.
Target Audience:
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Physician Assistant (PA)
Session Objectives:
- Identify risk factors for the development of osteoporosis and the pathophysiological process for its development
- Review diagnostic criteria and diagnostic tools for identifying osteoporosis in our patient population
- Explain diagnostic lab work necessary prior to treatment for osteoporosis and the pitfalls regarding its interpretation.
- Review preventative, lifestyle, and pharmacological treatment options for the condition of osteoporosis
- Apply best practice strategies to mitigate osteoporotic fragility fractures in our patient populations through early identification and treatment.
