Series Description:
Despite increasing numbers of transgender individuals entering the medical field, many continue to feel unsafe disclosing their gender identity and/or face ongoing discrimination. Proper use of chosen name and pronouns is a simple way to affirm a colleague’s gender identity. However, use of non-binary pronouns may especially be challenging for some people to learn to use, and instead of understanding the history behind and the importance for why we should use someone’s pronouns correctly, these same individuals may continue to unintentionally (or even intentionally) misgender transgender colleagues. These microaggressions or even macroaggressions/over discrimination in turn cause continuous harm to transgender providers, which can even indirectly cause harm to patients. Therefore, the purpose of this presentation is help improve the experiences of transgender providers by educating healthcare workers on how to use pronouns properly and discuss why this form of gender affirmation is so important. In this talk, we will review basic terminology relevant to the transgender community, take a brief dive into the history of non-binary pronouns, and end with guidance on how to be a better transgender ally.
