Steven Poser, Ph.D. has been practicing psychoanalysis in New York City for more than 30 years. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Faculty Psychotherapy Conference of the Department of Psychiatry, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. In 2024 he was awarded the Lou Linn Award for Excellence in Teaching from this group. He is the author of The Misfit (2011), a psychological study of Marilyn Monroe and her treatment relationship with her last psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, and Though This Be Madness (2014), a study of the visionary American artist Forrest Bess. His review essay on the psychoanalytic treatment of schizophrenia appeared in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2016. In 2023 he was awarded an Honorary Membership in the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. In 2025 he published This Is Me, Is That You? Encounters with Schizophrenia,Yale University Press, a memoir of his work with three chronically psychotic women he came to know in the course of his clinical internship in a now demolished 19th century insane asylum. Also an accomplished visual artist, he has had numerous exhibitions of his work and maintains a studio in the Hudson Valley. He is a three-time Gradiva Award winner from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for his work both as an artist and curator.
