Description: 

This program is designed for novice and experienced RNs working in a surgical setting who wish to add scrubbing to their practice. This 2-day live (in-person) program consists of lecture, hands on practice, and skills stations. Using the AORN principles as a framework for evidence-based content, this program offers a review of the necessary skills utilized by Scrub nurses and Surgical Techs in the operating room.

Target Audience

Nurse, Registered (RN)

Learning Objectives

By the end of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

1.) Demonstrate how to set up a sterile field, back table, and mayo stand while maintaining sterility.

2.) Identify strategies to prevent sharps injuries during procedures.

3.) Practice basic scrub role skills such as suture loading and instrument passing.

4.) Demonstrate appropriate surgical draping techniques to maintain a sterile field.

5.) Discuss the concept of surgical conscience and its role in maintaining patient safety.

6.) Identify common surgical instruments and classify them by category.

7.) Describe considerations for instrument set assembly based on procedure type and patient population.

8.) Identify the roles and responsibilities of the RN in the preparation and administration of medications.

9.) Identify best practices for labeling medications and their sterile transfer to the back table.

10.) Describe how to retrieve a specimen from the surgical field, correctly label it and deliver the specimen to the desired location.

11.) Differentiate between frozen, fresh, and permanent specimen orders and their uses.

12.) Demonstrate the correct technique for creating a sterile field.

13.) Demonstrate the correct method for opening various types of sterile items and dispensing them to the sterile field.

14.) Recognize contaminated items and implement corrective measures to maintain sterility.

15.) Identify evidence-based practices to perform effective surgical hand antisepsis.

16.) demonstrate the correct way to perform the wet, five-minute scrub, apply waterless hand scrub and don a sterile gown and gloves using sterile technique.
