Sergio Zanotti Cavazzoni, MD, FCCM

Dr. Sergio Zanotti is a practicing Critical Care Medicine physician and the Chief Medical Officer
of Sound Critical Care at Sound Physicians. He hosts "Critical Matters," a respected podcast that
explores a wide range of topics related to critical care medicine.
A graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion, Dr. Zanotti completed his medical
residency and was chief resident at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago,
Illinois. Sergio completed a Fellowship in critical care medicine at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s
Medical Center. He is board-certified in Critical Care Medicine and Neurocritical Care.
Dr. Zanotti's focus on medical education and clinical excellence has earned him numerous
awards. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In 2024, Cooper
University Health Care established "The Sergio L. Zanotti-Cavazzoni Faculty of the Year Award"
for the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, honoring his significant contributions to medical
education. Throughout his career, he has received Presidential Citations from the Society of
Critical Care Medicine on multiple occasions. In 2022, Dr. Zanotti received the Barry A. Shapiro
Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care Management.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Zanotti is a prolific author, lecturer, and researcher. He has served
as Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook of Critical Care Medicine and the Self-Assessment in Adult
Multiprofessional Critical Care Medicine. With over 100 publications—including articles, book
chapters, and abstracts—he is a highly sought-after speaker and has presented on a wide
variety of topics at regional, national, and international conferences.
He played a key role in developing and later chaired the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s
Leadership Empowerment and Development (LEAD) committee. Dr. Zanotti has extensive
experience in leadership development and has mentored many successful clinical leaders.
Additionally, he is certified in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies and pioneered the
implementation of the Lean ICU concept within Sound Physicians.
As Chief Medical Officer for Sound Critical Care, he oversees clinical quality and excellence
across more than 100 ICUs and nearly 2,000 beds nationwide. A visionary leader, Dr. Zanotti is
committed to transforming critical care delivery at scale, driven by his unwavering dedication to
education and excellence.
