Timothy Sanders, MD, PhD

Dr. Timothy Sanders brings extensive clinical expertise and proven leadership to neonatal intensive care. He completed his PhD in Neurobiology at the University of Chicago with his medical training at Cornell, pediatrics residency at Boston Children's Hospital, and neonatology fellowship at UCSF, building a foundation rooted in academic excellence and hands-on patient care.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sanders has demonstrated exceptional leadership in high-acuity neonatal care, holding directorships for Neonatal Transport, NeuroNICU, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship programs. His experience spans institutions including UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and The University of Chicago, where he has consistently focused on improving outcomes for critically ill newborns and their families.
A dedicated mentor and educator, Dr. Sanders has guided medical students, pediatric residents, neonatology fellows, and early career neonatologists, fostering the next generation of specialists committed to excellence in neonatal care. His research background in neurobiology and early development, including influential publications in the journals Nature and Science, provides valuable insight into the developmental needs of NICU patients, informing evidence-based clinical decisions.
In joining Sutter Medical Center Sacramento as the new Medical Director for the Neonatal ICU, he serves as the only the 4th Medical Director of the Neonatal ICU, the largest NICU in Northern California.
When not caring for patients or mentoring colleagues, he enjoys trail running, playing tennis, and spending time in nature with his family.
