0935_CPMC_ Assessing Capacity When Communication Is Limited _Live
Description:
There are situations that arise where the medical team may have difficulty determining a patient’s capacity due to their underlying medical and/or psychiatric conditions where the patient’s ability to participate in their medical care may be limited. Participants will learn alternatives methods to traditional capacity assessments, strategies to implement, and how to utilize interdisciplinary team members to ascertain capacity. By using these strategies, healthcare providers can ensure that the patient’s wishes are respected and align with their plan of care.

Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this activity, the participants should be able to:
1. Describe the ethical concerns in addressing capacity in populations where traditional methods are limited.
2. Learn alternative means to assess capacity in situations where patient’s ability to participate is limited due to current medical condition and diagnosis.
3. Identify collaborative services and the support of interdisciplinary team members to assist in determining a patient’s ability to participate in their medical decision making.
