0980_SHU_Perioperative Essentials for the L&D RN_Live - 8.28.26 Class
Description:
This one-day, in-person course was developed to address critical gaps in surgical counting practices, abdominal and vaginal prep, OR staff roles, fetal monitoring, and universal protocol adherence. Through evidence-based instruction aligned with AORN standards, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of standardized circulating responsibilities to ensure every patient receives consistent, safe perioperative care.

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
• Define principles of surgical asepsis and proper sterile field setup in obstetric procedures.
• Identify breaks in sterility and implement immediate corrective actions.
• Demonstrate maintenance of a sterile field during cesarean delivery and emergent procedures.
Gowning
• Demonstrate proper surgical hand antisepsis and closed-gloving technique.
• Differentiate between sterile and non-sterile gowning procedures.
• Maintain sterility during gowning in both scheduled and emergency situations.
• Describe the components of Universal Protocol.
• Perform a time-out accurately for cesarean and obstetric surgical procedures.
• Identify strategies to prevent wrong-site, wrong-procedure, and wrong-patient errors.
AORN Standards
• Summarize the purpose of Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses guidelines in perioperative nursing.
• Apply key AORN recommendations to obstetric surgical care.
• Integrate evidence-based standards into daily L&D perioperative practice.
• Explain indications and timing for surgical counts in obstetric procedures.
• Perform correct counting techniques for sponges, sharps, and instruments.
• Describe actions to take when count discrepancies occur.

• Describe basic instrument handling and passing techniques.
• Recognize proper instrument care and safety considerations.
