Dr. Samir A. Shah is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University
in Providence, RI and served as Chief of Gastroenterology at the Miriam Hospital from 2009-2025Spec.
He is a partner with Gastroenterology Associates, Inc, powered by the Specialty Alliance, a private
practice GI group affiliated with Brown University.
Dr. Shah earned his BA in Biochemistry magna cum laude at Brown and his MD at Harvard Medical
School in Boston, MA. After graduating, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at
the Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He continued for a fellowship in
Gastroenterology at the same institution where he was awarded a Howard Hughes Postdoctoral
Fellowship for Physicians and spent two years in the laboratory studying murine models of
Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Dr Shah has co-authored more than 200 abstracts/book chapters/articles and has given over 100 invited
presentations primarily devoted to inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Shah is the recipient of numerous
honors and awards, including Brown University’s Teaching Recognition Award, The Dean’s Teaching
Excellence Certificate, Brown University’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Clinical Faculty, the
Beckwith Family Award for Outstanding Teaching, the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG)
Freshman Governor’s Award and later the William D. Carey Award. In October of 2025, he was
recognized as a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology (MACG) at the ACG’s annual
meeting. The New England Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation named him Humanitarian of
the Year in 2009 and co-recipient of the Joan Cutler lifetime achievement award in 2020 and the
Lifetime Achievement Award from the DDNC in 2023. Rhode Island Monthly consistently names him
among the Top Doctors in Rhode Island.    
He served as co-chair of the Membership Committee of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation from 2018-
2021 and previously served as co-chair of the Professional Education Committee from 2015-2018.  He
served as co-chair of the IBD-Circle, an online community sponsored by the Crohns and Colitis
Foundation and the ACG and continues to serve on the faculty panel. He is one of the faculty for IBD
Live, sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic and IBD school sponsored by the ACG. He has been one of
the ACG representatives to the Digestive Diseases National Coalition (DDNC) and served as President
of the DDNC from 2018-2020. He has served on the Board of Trustees for the American College of
Gastroenterology since 2005 (finishing in 2024) and served as President of the ACG from 2021-2022.
 He has participated in several multi-center clinical trials of cutting-edge therapies for IBD and was co-
principal investigator for OSCCAR (Ocean State Crohn’s and Colitis Area Registry). Since 2015, he has
served as the lead physician for his group in the IBD QORUS program through the Crohn's and Colitis
Foundation.
