Principles & Practice of Clinician Leadership 1 offers hands-on, practical skill development for new front-line physician and advanced practice clinician (APC) leaders. This program develops the foundational skills and mindset that are essential to effective leadership of interprofessional teams and working groups with a focus that includes evidence-based approaches to promote communication, collaboration, team cohesiveness, and change management.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss the characteristics of the Growth Mindset.
  2. Associate the importance of clinician leadership at Sutter Health with our key results, values, and culture.
  3. Identify how one’s energy impacts their work, learning and interactions with others through exploration of the 5 Dynamics.
  4. Identify 3 critical leadership skills to be included on your Individualized Learning Plan.
  5. Summarize the 4 Quadrants of Emotional Intelligence: Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Self-Management, and Relationship Management.
  6. Integrate mindfulness into leadership practice.
  7. Relate the importance of resilience to leadership.
  8. Apply active listening and humble inquiry strategies to improve influence.
  9. Apply the change management model to the process of managing change.
  10. Assess your team’s stage/level of development.
  11. Employ strategies to build a high-performing team.
