Roland Henry, PhD
Dr. Roland Henry is the Rachleff Distinguished Professor in the Department of Neurology, University of California San Francisco where he has been on faculty for the last 30 years. Dr. Henry holds con-current appointments in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, and the Graduate Group in Bioengineering at UCSF/UC Berkeley.
Dr. Henry has vast experience in quantitative imaging and has designed and implemented many algorithms for quantitative image analysis. Some technical developments include development and validation of non-parametric bootstrap methods for estimating standard errors of MRI metrics that provide objective means of assessing algorithms and acquisitions schemes including an application to evaluation of the role of cardiac gating for diffusion MRI acquisitions. Non-parametric bootstrap methods were also utilized to develop probabilistic fiber tracking algorithms based on non-parametric estimates of probability distributions of fiber track orientations, and higher-order fiber tracking methods based on the Q-ball reconstruction. Other important areas of development have included non-parametric statistical methods for voxel-wise analysis of changes in single-subject diffusion maps.
Presently Dr. Henry Directs the Neuroinflammatory and MS Imaging Program in the Department of Neurology, UCSF. His primary focus is the development and application of MR techniques for the study of MS and other neuroinflammatory disorders. Dr. Henry has extensive experience in leading MRI programs for large multicenter collaborations including the MRI studies among 21 sites internationally for the International MS Genetics Consortium and MRI for clinical trials. Over the last decade Dr. Henry and others have spearheaded the importance of spinal cord MRI for Multiple Sclerosis management and clinical trials with the development of new methods for assessing spinal cord atrophy as well as implementation in clinical trials.
