0234_ABSMC Medical Grand Rounds_Addiction Medicine 101_Live
Description
Between 1999 and 2020, more than 800,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, and escalating rates of drug addiction have contributed to recent decreases in U.S. life expectancy. In 2016, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), officially recognized addiction medicine as a medical subspecialty under the American Board of Preventive Medicine. This action emphasized the importance of addiction medicine as a distinct subspecialty among other subspecialties in the field of medicine. Addiction Medicine is a relatively new field and its basic tenets are often unfamiliar to those outside the field. Sutter care centers have a variety of substance abuse programs that can help care for patients with substance or alcohol use disorders. The goal of this grand rounds is to provide the primary care team with an understanding of addiction medicine as a specialty, reduce stigma against substance use disorder patients, and improve access to high-quality, evidence-based addiction prevention and treatment programs for our patients.

Learning Objectives
After this session, learners will be able to:
1. Diagnose substance use disorders appropriately.
2. Identify which patients would be most appropriately served by an addiction medicine specialist for development of an individualized treatment plan.
3. Practice use of destigmatizing language by using person-first language, which focuses on the person—not their illness.
4. Discuss best practice approaches to addiction medicine associated with enhanced quality of care for individuals suffering from addiction.
