0589_NLWD_Introdution to Emergency Severity Index_Live
Description:
The Emergency Severity Index (ESI) is a tool for use in emergency department triage. Triage has many purposes to prioritize care including the need to identify patients who require immediate resuscitation, assigning patients to the correct patient care area and initiating the appropriate diagnostic/therapeutic measures. The ESI triage algorithm yields rapid, reproducible, and clinically relevant stratification of patients into five groups, from level 1 (most urgent) to level 5 (least urgent). This course is designed to educate the emergency nurse in Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage. At the completion of this activity, participants will have the information they need to be able to properly apply the ESI Triage algorithm triage patients in the emergency department.
Target Audience
Nurse, Registered (RN)
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Learning Objectives
After this activity concludes a learner will be able to:
1. Select immediate lifesaving interventions as defined by the ESI algorithm
2. Identify the three major criteria for ESI level 2
3. Distinguish various resources as defined by the ESI algorithm.
4. Select patients who require up-triage to ESI Level 2 based on vital sign criteria.
5. Apply the ESI algorithm to patient case study scenarios.
