Description:

Acute mental illness and the stress that it causes will elicit a psychological adjustment which, depending on how patients respond, can lead to either improvement or deterioration of health. This adjustment process may be supported by healthcare interventions, examples of which include self-management support, supportive care, or rehabilitation. This lecture will include a review of various patterns of psychological adjustment displayed by patients with acute medical illness. Consideration will be given to the selection of appropriate psychological interventions, depending upon the pattern of adjustment being displayed.
