Description:
This grand rounds discussion examines the unique considerations of medical aid in dying (MAID) for patients with neurological disorders. It will highlight how progressive neurological conditions present distinct challenges, particularly regarding the assessment of decision-making capacity that may fluctuate or decline while physical suffering increases. Physicians explore the ethical tension between patient autonomy and medical obligations, noting that neurological patients often face a critical timing dilemma as physical abilities to self-administer medication may be lost before decision-making capacity. Comprehensive symptom management alongside psychological support for patients and families and stresses the value of respectful multidisciplinary approaches regardless of individual physician perspectives on MAID.
