Description:
The Sutter Health University Transition to Charge Nurse Leadership Program is a three-month, Cohort program consisting of 4 sessions each, 3 cohorts. This is a system‑wide program focused on developing the skills and addressing the situations commonly encountered in the charge nurse role. The program uses evidence‑based active learning strategies and offers multiple instructional modalities, including self‑directed learning activities, interactive lectures, case studies, facilitated discussion and reflection, hands‑on skills practice, video simulation, and structured problem‑solving exercises. The program includes a virtual Zoom kickoff followed by four in‑person instructional days, each eight hours in length, designed to meet specific program objectives and mentor support. Each in‑person day concludes with dedicated time for participant reflection and program evaluation.

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:
Session 1:
- Identify personal core values and examine how alignment between personal values, organizational values, and purpose (“why”) supports authentic charge nurse leadership.
- Discuss behaviors that build, maintain, and repair trust within clinical teams, including communication practices that promote psychological safety.
- Recognize signs of imposter syndrome in oneself and others and identify strategies to support confidence, resilience, and professional growth during role transition.
- Identify leadership actions that support effective patient throughput, staff allocation, and care coordination.
- Differentiate between patient satisfaction and patient experience and describe how charge nurse behaviors influence both.
- Apply emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and self‑regulation strategies to enhance decision‑making, leadership presence, and sustainability in the charge nurse role.
Session 2:
- Describe how communication style influence charge nurse effectiveness in leading teams and managing daily operations.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and prioritization skills to support safe staffing, delegation, patient throughput, and effective shift management.
- Identify appropriate delegation practices, including the Five Rights of Delegation, to enhance team performance, accountability, and patient safety.
- Utilize coaching and feedback strategies to support staff development, address performance concerns, and strengthen professional relationships.
- Discuss techniques for managing difficult interpersonal behaviors while maintaining professionalism, boundaries, and trust.
- Explain the role of psychological safety, inclusion, and belonging in fostering effective teamwork and a healthy work environment.
Session 3:
- Analyze strategies for effectively leading a multigenerational workforce and adapt leadership approaches to meet diverse staff needs.
- Demonstrate effective communication strategies (e.g., SBAR, closed-loop communication) to enhance clarity, teamwork, and patient safety.
- Apply the appropriate chain of command in clinical and administrative scenarios to ensure timely and safe escalation of concerns.
- Foster a psychologically safe work environment by identifying behaviors that promote trust, speaking up, and mutual respect.
- Evaluate the role of the charge nurse, including the Pause and Schwartz Rounds, in supporting team well-being after critical events.
- Apply conflict resolution techniques to effectively manage interpersonal and team conflicts.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue in self and others and differentiate between the two.
- Develop and implement strategies to mitigate burnout and compassion fatigue at both the individual and team level.
- Integrate resiliency-building practices (e.g., mindfulness, peer support, reflective practice) into daily leadership behaviors.
Session 4:
- Analyze the relationship between frontline clinical practices and organizational performance metrics, financial sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
- Describe the many factors that affect organizational wellness including quality metrics, patient surveys and value-based purchasing.
- Recognize patient experience surveys and feedback to identify unit gaps and champion interventions that elevate the overall patient experience.
- Recognize how unit-level decisions and throughput barriers ripple out to impact the efficiency, safety, and capacity of the broader Sutter system.
- Compare satisfied and engaged teams within a healthcare team.
- Establish personal and professional goals that build grit and growth mindset
