Dr. Joseph Chiang serves as Chief Medical Officer for Sutter Health’s Greater Central Valley Market. In this role, he is focused on transforming healthcare delivery with the goal of increasing access, enhancing patient experience and care quality, and integrating all aspects of care.   

Dr. Chiang most recently was the Chief Medical Executive at Sutter Eden Medical Center. Prior to Eden, Dr Chiang was the Senior Regional Director for Vituity, a national multispecialty physician partnership.  Dr Chiang also was the Medical Director & Chair of Emergency Medicine at Sutter Memorial Medical Center, Sutter Memorial Hospital Los Banos and San Joaquin General Hospital. 

He currently serves as Board Secretary and Treasurer of CARESTAR Foundation, whose mission is to reimagine emergency and prehospital care with a racial equity lens to improve health outcomes for all Californians.

Dr. Chiang holds a B.A. in history and economics from New York University, an MBA with a medical management concentration from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst and an M.D. from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  He completed his Emergency Medicine training at Mount Sinai serving as Administrative Chief Resident in his last year.  This was followed by a Management Fellowship with Vituity.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and is LEAN Green Belt Certified.
