Infection Control Coordinator
Gloria Mathis is a dedicated Infection Preventionist who partners with healthcare professionals and customers internal and external to her organization in order to prevent the spread of infections in the healthcare system and beyond. She is passionate about creating and maintaining a safe and quality environment for patient care through infection prevention practices.
A native of Portland, OR she obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at the University of Portland in 1996. After two years in Healthcare Administration in a surgical oncology clinic at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), she attended Nursing School at OHSU where she graduated Summa cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2000. As an RN, she worked first as a cardiac Nurse on a Telemetry/Step-Down Unit. She then joined Multnomah County Health Department as a Public Health Nurse where she performed a wide variety of roles including primary care clinic Nurse, Home Visiting Nurse, EHR Nurse Consultant, and Nursing Staff Education Coordinator. When the H1N1 pandemic hit in 2009, she found her calling to Infection Prevention and Control and moved to San Francisco to begin her career as an Infection Control Nurse at the San Francisco VAMC. She obtained her Certification in Infection Control (CIC) in 2011. In September 2016, after 15 years of service to the local and federal government, she left the VA to join the Infection Prevention and Control Team at California Pacific Medical Center where she works today. The part of the job that brings her the most fulfillment and joy is collaborating with collaborating with internal and external partners and leaders, staff, patients, and visitors to keep the hospital and community safe from infections.
