0766_PAMF_IP Series_ OR/Sterile & Invasive Procedures & Infection Prevention_Live

October 9, 2025

Description:

This session translates up-to-date, evidence-based guidance for preventing infections in the OR and invasive procedural areas (e.g., interventional radiology, cath lab, endoscopy). We will connect persistent practice gaps and equity concerns to practical fixes, then operationalize sterile technique, procedural traffic control, and device reprocessing into checklists and rapid audits. Participants will map strategies from the 2023 SHEA–IDSA–APIC SSI Compendium to their local workflows and documentation and apply them to both OR and non OR settings. We will also address social determinants of health and implicit bias—how neighborhood vulnerability and clinician bias can influence perioperative care—and identify steps to mitigate these effects in day to day practice

Learning Objectives

After completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

1) Apply current SSI prevention recommendations by selecting ≥5 high impact practices (e.g., pre incision bundle reliability, OR/procedural traffic control, normothermia, glycemic control) for immediate implementation in their unit.

2) Evaluate sterile technique and traffic practices using a 10-point observation tool and correct at least three common breaks in asepsis during a mock or real case.

3) Develop a compliant reprocessing plan for five common devices in OR/procedural areas, including cleaning vs. HLD vs. sterilization, process monitoring (CIs/BIs), documentation, and escalation steps; and integrate equity/bias mitigation prompts into the plan.
