Brenda Oiyemhonlan - Sule, MD, MHSA, MPH, FACEP
Dr. Brenda Oiyemhonlan-Sule is an emergency medicine physician recognized for her expertise in clinical operations and her deep commitment to health equity, quality improvement, and innovation.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior from the University of California, Davis, where she served on the board of the Imani Clinic, a student-run health initiative. She went on to complete dual Master’s degrees in Health Services Administration and Public Health at the University of Michigan before beginning her career as a healthcare consultant with Accenture LLP in Atlanta, Georgia. She later earned her medical degree at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. Drawn to emergency medicine for its role in caring for vulnerable populations, she trained at Kings County Hospital/SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she was chief resident, and also completed a fellowship in Emergency Department Administration and Leadership at Emory University, with her main clinical site at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Oiyemhonlan-Sule joined UCSF’s Department of Emergency Medicine in 2017, where she was awarded the John A. Watson Junior Faculty Award, and became an America’s Essential Hospitals Fellow. She transitioned to The Permanente Medical Group in 2020, where she serves as a regional leader for the Advanced Care at Home Initiative and leads several process and quality improvement efforts for patients with sickle cell disease, including developing region-wide ED tools to standardize care and building cross-system collaborations with Alameda Health System, Sutter Health, and UCSF.
She was the inaugural co-director of the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association Physician Changemaker’s Course, which equips physician leaders to advance health equity and quality improvement. A National Medical Fellowships 40 Under 40 awardee, she is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the Oakland Bay Area Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., where she has chaired several strategic initiatives.
Dr. Oiyemhonlan-Sule serves on the Board of Directors at Holy Names High School and resides in Oakland with her husband and two daughters, who inspire her service and leadership.
