Description: 

This one-hour grand rounds session will discuss approaches to managing sickle cell disease in the emergency department, with a focus on timely pain control and patient-centered care. Through interactive case discussions and practical tools, participants will gain insights into overcoming clinical challenges and addressing psychosocial needs. The session will highlight strategies for effective interdisciplinary teamwork, emphasizing collaboration among ED staff, hematology, pharmacy, social work, and case management. Attendees can expect to leave with actionable skills to improve care coordination and outcomes for sickle cell patients.

• Recognize the unique clinical challenges and needs of sickle cell patients presenting to the emergency department, including pain management, acute complications, and psychosocial considerations.

• Describe evidence-based strategies and protocols for optimizing care delivery in the ED, including timely assessment and use of standardized order sets.

• Identify opportunities for intra- and interdepartmental collaboration, including ED staff, hematology, pharmacy, social work, and case management, to improve patient outcomes.

• Explore strategies for building external community partnerships that support ongoing care, education, and advocacy for sickle cell patients beyond the ED setting.

• Apply quality improvement principles to develop and implement sustainable interventions, tracking metrics and outcomes to enhance the overall care experience for sickle cell patients.
