This workshop is designed to build foundational and practical skills in evidence-based practice (EBP). Participants will learn to identify clinical problems unique to Sutter Health, formulate PICOT questions, conduct thorough literature searches, and critically appraise research using validated tools. Through guided instruction and hands-on activities, learners will: Identify and address Sutter-specific clinical problems. Formulate precise PICOT questions Conduct comprehensive literature searches using Sutter Health's library resources. Critically appraise research using validated tools and frameworks. Explore various levels of evidence and understand their application in clinical practice. Review essential statistical concepts relevant to EBP. Synthesize research findings to develop evidence-based recommendations. The course aligns with EBP competencies 1–7 and equips nurses to apply EBP effectively in their day-to-day clinical decision-making to improve patient outcomes. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to integrate EBP into their practice, enhancing the quality of care provided at Sutter Health.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Differentiate among commonly used critical appraisal tools and determine their appropriate application based on study design and level of evidence.
  • Select an appropriate critical appraisal tool to evaluate research studies that address a clinical question relevant to their practice.
  • Apply a validated critical appraisal tool to assess the quality, validity, and relevance of evidence related to a Sutter Health-specific clinical case.
  • Critically evaluate research findings and interpret their implications for answering a PICOT-formulated clinical question.
  • Synthesize appraised evidence to develop evidence-based recommendations that support clinical decision-making and practice improvement.
  • Integrate evidence from critically appraised research into patient care decisions while addressing common challenges encountered during evidence search and appraisal processes.
  • Discuss the strengths, limitations, and applicability of research evidence with peers and mentors to support informed evidence-based practice decisions.
