Varun Takyar, Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Dr. Varun Takyar is a gastroenterologist with a special interest in liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease. He completed his residency at the University of Arizona, where his clinical experiences with patients suffering from alcoholic and MAFLD-related cirrhosis—at a time when direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C were transforming care—sparked a lasting interest in hepatology.
He went on to complete a research fellowship at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, where he conducted clinical and translational research in viral hepatitis, MAFLD, and alcohol-related liver disease. This experience solidified his passion for combining patient care with academic inquiry.
Following a move to California to be closer to family, Dr. Takyar completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Southern California. In the diverse and urban setting of Los Angeles, he gained extensive experience managing complex liver disease and developed a growing niche interest in inflammatory bowel disease.
For the past five years, he has been a member of the Sutter East Bay Medical Group in Northern California, where his practice includes both general gastroenterology and hepatology, with liver disease accounting for roughly 30% of his patient population. He remains actively involved in academic medicine through ongoing research collaborations and contributions to textbook chapters on liver disease.
Dr. Takyar is married to a primary care physician, and together they share a commitment to healthy living and preventive care—guided by the belief that “Health is the true wealth.”
