0595_Sutter Health Neurosciences Grand Rounds - Neuroinfectious Disease Updates_Live
Description:
Recent advances in molecular diagnostics are enabling more rapid and precise pathogen identification, allowing for earlier targeted therapy when treating patients with neuroinfectious diseases. While novel approaches show promise in improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment specificity, they must be balanced against established empiric protocols that have demonstrated clinical efficacy. This lecture will provide details on emerging research into immunomodulatory therapies, biomarker-guided treatment strategies, and host-directed therapeutics in an effort to advance neuroscience professionals growing knowledge base and foster widespread adoption.
Target Audience
Physicians (MD or DO)
Physician Assistant (PA)
Other Healthcare Professionals
Learning Objectives
After completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
1.) Recognize the clinical presentation of emerging neurologic infections (e.g., cryptococcal gattii meningitis) and atypical presentations of neurologic infections in immunocompromised hosts (e.g., HSV encephalitis)
2.) Describe potential pitfalls of diagnostic testing for neurologic infections
3.) Identify alternative and emerging treatments for neurologic infections (e.g., neurosyphilis, PML, TB meningitis) and changes in guidelines on monitoring after treatment. 4.) Discuss the impact of climate change on the epidemiology of neurological infections (e.g., coccidioidal meningitis)
