Learning Objectives
After completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize the significance of prognostication in chronic neurological illness to prepare for the future and as a foundation for shared decision making.
2. Present the need for the right context, timing, style and environment for conversations around prognosis, so that these may be relevant, effective, and build instead of break rapport.
3. Identify the inherent complexities and limitations involved in prognostication, including the role of uncertainty and bias.
4. Practice effective communication strategies and frameworks to guide these discussions while recognizing these limitations.
Akanksha Sharma, M.D., a speaker for this activity, disclosed ownership equity in Roon, a privately held startup. After review, this financial relationship was determined not to be relevant to the content of this educational activity, which focuses on prognostication in chronic neurological illness, including communication strategies, ethical considerations, uncertainty, and bias in clinician–patient conversations. As the activity does not address products, services, or business interests related to Roon, no mitigation was required.
Kenneth Laxer, M.D., a planner for this activity, disclosed receipt of speaker fees from SK Life Science. Educational topics and speaker selection are determined by an independent interdisciplinary planning committee whose members have no relevant financial relationships. Dr. Laxer’s role in planning is focused on administrative coordination and implementation. In addition, the content of this year's RSS grand rounds has been intentionally chosen to not relate to any product or business lines of SK Life Science, which focuses on epilepsy therapeutics. Therefore, the clear role delineation limits influence and no additional mitigation is required.
Armen Moughamian, M.D., a planner for this activity, disclosed consulting, professional services, and speaker relationships with Eisai, Eli Lilly, Corium, Genentech/Roche, and Biogen. To mitigate this financial relationship, Dr. Moughamian was excluded from topic selection, speaker selection, and control of educational content. Educational topics and speaker selection were determined by an independent interdisciplinary planning committee whose members have no relevant financial relationships.
Faculty involved in choosing speakers/topics/influence on content : Shawn Kyle, Eric Collins.
