Description: 

This course provides nurses and technologist, new to the cath lab environment with an overview of related anatomy and physiology, disease processes, diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional treatment options, and practical evidence-based strategies for recognizing, preventing, and managing common procedural complications. Participants will review current guidelines, normal and abnormal hemodynamic profiles, emergency interventions, and team communication through lectures and case-based discussions. The program is designed to increase confidence and competence in assisting with a variety of cath lab procedures.

Learning objectives: 

  1. Describe cardiovascular anatomy, coronary physiology, hemodynamic principles, and the indications for common cardiac catheterization procedures. Identify the roles, equipment, procedural steps, and patient care considerations associated with diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures.
  2. Recognize and apply evidence-based practices for radiation safety, complication management, and multidisciplinary teamwork to support safe, high-quality patient care in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
  3. Differentiate the indications, workflow, and patient care considerations for diagnostic cardiac catheterization, coronary intervention, and emerging cardiovascular procedures performed in the cath lab.
